The method of applying mulch as well as the type of mulch used is vital to the health of plants. One mistake and you will kill your tree. So follow these proper tree mulching steps.

  • Inspect your plants and the soil in the area you will mulch. Determine if there is adequate drainage and if there are plants that can be affected by your choice of mulch. The slight acid from mulch like the pine bark can benefit some plants.

  • If there's old mulch in the area, check how deep. Don't add more if there's enough layer already.  Rake the existing mulch to break up matted layers and improve the appearance. Some companies tree maintenance companies spray mulch with a vegetable-based, water soluble dye to refresh its overall look.

  • If the mulch was piled against the trunk or stem of a tree, pull it back a couple of inches so the root crons and the trunk's base are exposed. Mulches made from organic materials are often preferred over inorganic mulches. This is because of their properties that enhance the soil. If you use organic mulch, keep in mind that it must be aerated well and composted. Do not use mulch that smells sour.

  • Mulch made from composted wood chips is ideal, especially when it has a blend of wood, bark, and leaves. You can also use fredh wood chips around already established shrubs and trees. Di not use non-composted wood ships that have been deeply piled and therefore not exposed to oxygen.

  • If the are is well drained, apply a two- to four inch layer of mulch. Apply a thinner layer if there are problems with drainage. Do not put mulch against the trunk of a tree, instead, place mulch out to the drip line of a tree or beyond.
